Employment Tribunal Pile Up
Another busy year in the Employment Tribunal.
Figures for the last 12 months show that there has been a 40% increase in the number of claims received by the Employment Tribunal Service.
The figures published demonstrate that, as would be expected, the increase is primarily down to the current economic climate and, in particular, the volume of redundancies being experienced.
Claims for unfair dismissal, notice pay, statutory redundancy pay and failure to collectively consult all saw significant increases on previous years.
At the same time, the multiple claimant equal pay claims, largely brought by employees in the public sector, saw a drop, following year-on-year increases over the last 5 years.
Overall, the Tribunal Service is under continuing pressure to reduce costs and, therefore, is struggling to accommodate the claims, in both administrative terms and the hearing of claims. Practically speaking, this means if you have a claim, expect delays along the way.
